With limits to physical interactions and shrinking civic space, now compounded by COVID 19, adopting participatory art practice to virtual spaces opens an alternative environment for freedom of expression, and enhances avenues for refugee – hosts interactions supportive of refugee integration and magnification of refugee stories transnationally.
The project responds to responds to SDGs 5, 16, 17; The Global compact on refugees; Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework, Culture for peace in Africa.
In this pilot project, we kick start the development of a training manual draft in participatory art and digital storytelling particularly tailored for building community between refugees and host communities using mobile phones as a primary tool. The process of developing the draft manual entails convening participatory art and digital story telling workshops, that simultaneously explore themes of democracy, human rights, and gender equality. We also include fact based COVID 19 messaging.
We believe that Culture, in all its variation, connects people more than divides them. At the Cultural Avenue, we aspire to promote the innovative use of culture as a connector of people.
